LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Nine days after a tornado demolished his three-story office building in downtown Mayfield, Ky., Sonny “Hoot” Gibson was standing in the rubble when he thought he heard a low meow.

It instantly gave her hope that her office cat, Madix, who hadn’t been seen since before the storms, was alive. Gibson said he tried to find the sturdy black cat with yellow eyes who liked to greet customers at his rental business, but gave up after a few days.

“I don’t know how anything could have survived not only the tornado but the destruction that accompanied it,” he said.

Gibson was standing in the rubble on Sunday afternoon when he heard a slight noise.

“I thought I heard a meow, and I thought my mind was playing tricks on me so I called out his name, and he meowed again,” Gibson said.

The noise was muffled and he couldn’t locate Madix immediately, so he called employees who came to help with the search. Soon after, they found the cat in a hole under the rubble.

“It was just an amazing feeling to put him in my arms,” Gibson said. “If the cats actually have nine lives, he’s probably used about eight in that nine-day period. “

In addition to being very hungry and thirsty, Madix was unharmed. Gibson said he brought Madix home, where he will live the rest of his life as a domestic cat.

Gibson said the story of Madix, the survivor, was becoming popular in the town of Mayfield, where a long-trajectory tornado demolished huge parts of the community.

“It is a blessing for people to hear the story so that they can understand it and realize that great things can come out of terrible situations. If this is uplifting for a person, then Madix has served her purpose on this planet.
