Thousands of spectators are expected to descend on the Yorkshire seaside town in support of Britain’s armed forces – with interest set to increase due to the scenes seen recently after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – so here’s our guide for the day, including a few secret spots to bag the best view while avoiding the crowds!
Sponsored by Tesco, organizers have promised those attending the air show over Scarborough’s South Bay they will be treated to demonstrations of some of this country’s most impressive planes.

Scarborough National Armed Forces Day: when is it?
Scarborough National Armed Forces Day: Where’s Best to Look?
Undoubtedly the busiest location will be in Scarborough’s South Bay itself, on the waterfront. We anticipate the bustle of the day there, with a carnival atmosphere for those who like to be in the heart of the action.
More savvy viewers, or those who prefer less congestion, may want to head to the St. Nicholas Gardens or perhaps the Town Hall Gardens where the views of the exhibition will be superb and the space will be more readily available.
Locals and those familiar with Scarborough will almost certainly head over the Spa, to the South Cliff in and around the Esplanade – or, if you want to soak up the historic splendour, a small fee to enter the castle will take you will give an overview of the king and queen.
What’s the best place for fish and chips in Scarborough?
This title is hotly contested, depending on who you talk to. But for those new to Scarborough, we highly recommend leaving your packed lunch at home and heading for one of our best fries.
The South Bay has more world-class fish and chips than you can shake a wooden fork, so take your pick even if they’ll be busy. We highly recommend the Lifeboat Fish Bar in Eastborough – quite simply one of the best in the country.
If you prefer a cafe, try Cafe Columbus or Lookout on the Pier. There’s also Farrers at the Spa which never fails to impress or Harbor Bar – tell us what you think of their ice cream…but don’t tell anyone else!
Where can I book a stay that might be available for Armed Forces Day?
Reports suggest rooms, beds and caravans are filling up, so you’ll need to be quick. If you’re struggling, some of our lesser known but no less impressive favorite spots are:
– Falsgrave Leisure and Lodges
– Burnside Recreation Park, Burniston
Where is the best place to park for National Armed Forces Day?
Day parking will be chargeable. We recommend arriving early if you need to park your car or find ways to access the city that don’t require a car.
However, if you are driving, your best bet is to head to Balmoral NCP, Brunswick Center or Pavilion Square. Good luck!
