Brewery makes ‘hurricane season’ beer to educate drinkers on severe weather safety – The Hill

As hurricane season rears its ugly, wet head and promises to be as destructive as last year, a South Carolina brewery is working to educate locals on how to deal with storms safely incoming – one can at a time.

Tradesman Brewing Co., located in Charleston, recently launched a new “Hurricane seasonal lager,” a California joint that will be sold in select grocery stores and faucet rooms across the state through the end of November.

“Our goal is not necessarily to promote alcohol consumption, but to promote education in a different format for people who were probably going to pick up a four-pack anyway and drink responsibly,” Sara said. The beer comes in silver cans decorated with the state’s ubiquitous blue and white evacuation sign on the front and a QR code on the back. If drinkers wish, they can use their phone to scan the code and be directed to the South Carolina Division of Emergency Management’s online hurricane guide.

Once there, drinkers can download the department’s emergency management app which teaches users how to prepare for hurricanes of varying strengths, how to find shelter, and how to find and travel along the city’s many escape routes. ‘State.

South Carolina’s population has grown in recent years, with US Census data showing it was the fastest growing state in the country from 2020 to 2021 due to an influx of people move in.

Tradesman wanted to create a “hurricane” beer to help educate newcomers to Charleston who may not have had experience with hurricanes or extreme weather.

“It’s very important to us as locals and as we see our population growing and people moving here, while we appreciate everyone who wants to live in our city, we also experience the very, very bad side of people who don’t know what to do and maybe take storms for granted,” McConnell said.

Both McConnells are from South Carolina and know firsthand how bad hurricanes can be.

McConnell, who grew up on a barrier island outside of Charleston, was in college when Hurricane Hugo made landfall in 1989. The category five hurricane caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and the South -eastern United States, affecting approximately 2 million people and resulting in approximately $11 billion. in damage.

“It was the storm of the century for us until Katrina hit,” McConnell said. “I haven’t lived in my house for a year.”

McConnell recalled that when she went to check her house after Hugo knocked, she had to wear jeans, snake boots and carry ID showing her address in order to catch a ferry home since the Ben Sawyer Bridge had been so badly damaged. .

The “hurricane lager” has been available since the start of hurricane season last month, and during that time Tradesman has been tracking the number of QR scans and website visits to gauge whether the information is reaching South Carolinas.

In the first two weeks of beer distribution, 120 people scanned the code, with the majority based in Charleston or the greater Dorchester County area. According to McConnell, a few scans have come from as far away as Toronto and New York, which could mean vacationers are also scanning the codes.

The next step is to check if the number of scans increased after Tropical Storm Collins, which formed just before the 4e July weekend.

“Our hope is to bring him back next year,” McConnell said. “Take it out on the first day of hurricane season and put all that new education out there.”
