THE Department of Education (DepEd) mobilized relief and carried out psychosocial interventions in schools and field offices in the provinces affected by Typhoon “Odette” (international name: “Rai”).

“We have deployed staff to facilitate the processing and transport of donations as per our assessment. We assure our stakeholders that immediate funding for interventions in affected areas will be provided as soon as possible,” noted the Education Secretary. , Leonor Magtolis Briones.

According to the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS), the DepEd central office facilitated the upload of the P3.6M fund for cleanup and minor repairs.

The support funds will be used for the purchase of student and teacher kits with hygiene items, for the provision of psychological first aid and for emergency school feeding programmes.

There have also been in-kind donations to affected regions and divisions from humanitarian partners such as Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, the United Nations Children’s Fund, United Laboratories Inc., the Organization of Ministers of Education of Southeast Asia, Pasig City School Division Office (SDO) and SM Save More.

As of January 12, 2022 at noon, DepEd has registered 11 regions; 121 departments; 29,671 schools; and 12,029,272 learners affected by the onslaught of typhoon “Odette”.

These were DepEd-Region 5 (Bicol), Region 6 (Western Visayas), Region 7 (Central Visayas), Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) and Region 13 (Caraga or Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte , Surigao del Sur and the Dinagat Islands), which have been identified as hard hit areas. These areas also facilitated the processing and transport of donations from national government agencies, other regions and partners to reach the families of the staff and learners involved.

“On behalf of the department, we thank our partners and the SDOs, who have generously extended their services and resources to meet the needs of our stakeholders, schools and offices to ensure learning continues,” Briones said. .
