Heavy storms and a possible tornado hit Ocala causing damage, police say

Ocala police say a tornado touched down Saturday morning as severe storms swept through the state. The tornado damaged an animal shelter and other buildings on State Route 200 and homes in the El Dorado Subdivision off of 24th Avenue Southwest. 3900 blocks of SR 200 are damaged due to a tornado. No injuries reported so far. All lanes on SR 200 from SW 38 Ct. and SW 43 St. Rd. are blocked. Please avoid the area,” the Ocala Police Department wrote on Facebook. There is still a tornado watch in effect for northeast Florida until 11 a.m. Ocala clears tree branches as neighbors say they felt tornado-like winds blowing. “Several buildings and vehicles near the 3900 block of SR 200 are damaged due to a tornado. No injuries reported so far. All lanes on SR 200 from SW 38 Ct. and SW 43 St. Rd. are blocked. Please avoid the area,” the Ocala Police Department wrote on Facebook.

There is still a tornado watch in effect for Northeast Florida until 11 a.m.

“Weather conditions favor thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes in our area,” police said.
