On Thursday, October 4, the representative of the 2nd district of Rizal, Fidel Nograles, urged the Ministry of Agriculture (DA) to do everything possible to help farmers who must absorb the double whammy of two floods – Typhoon Maring and the uninterrupted smuggling of vegetables from China.

Nograles said local farmers are in dire economic straits as they also continue to suffer from the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Just a month ago, our farmers faced the proliferation of contraband vegetables from China. Now their crops have been damaged if not completely destroyed by the typhoon. In my opinion, it is right that we allocate funds to help them recover from this situation, ”Nograles said.

Nograles also recalled that the disaster will not be equally felt by consumers as the prices of vegetables rise after typhoons ravaged the north of the country.

“We have to act fast. We hope that the DA will be able to control the abuses committed by some traders at times like now, ”he added.

Solon de Rizal explained that some middlemen are known to abuse the situation by buying crops at very low prices from farmers while selling these vegetables at high prices due to low supply.

“We must be able to put an end to this unacceptable practice by cracking down on abusive traders. It is high time that we show farmers how important they are and how crucial their role will be in the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery, ”Nograles said.

A Harvard-trained lawyer, Nograles also noted that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has indicated that agriculture in northern Luzon will be a key driver in rebuilding the economy disrupted by COVID-19. BSP, in an online forum last week, also encouraged banks to offer low-interest loans to the agricultural sector.

“No less than our top economics researchers at BSP saw the potential of agriculture. Let’s make the Philippines’ economic recovery happen by helping Philippine agriculture, typhoon or no typhoon, ”Nograles said.
