For those in Greater Columbus, everyone knows the city is a foodie’s paradise.
From Downtown to Short North to Northland, you have a variety of restaurants to choose from that will satisfy your taste buds.
But drive 30 minutes north of Columbus and you’ll find the hidden gem that is the city of Delaware. Full of local restaurants and bars in its downtown area on and near Sandusky Street, the area is known for its long-standing eateries like the Hamburger Inn Diner and Bun’s Restaurant.
And more and more people are discovering the establishments of the city, with Booming business in Delaware restaurants last summer.
For those new to the city’s restaurant scene, here are some popular places to try in downtown Delaware.
Restaurant Burger Inn
With its long tables, direct view of the kitchen, and vintage signage, the Hamburger Inn is the epitome of an old-school restaurant. Located at 16 N. Sandusky St., the Hamburger Inn Diner has been in Delaware since the early 1900s, according to its website. Then known as the Senate Restaurant, the restaurant took on its current name in 1932.
Hamburger Inn is known for its made-to-order black angus steak burgers, like the Hangover Burger, which features bacon, American cheese, and an egg. The restaurant is also known for its breakfast dishes and homemade breads, cinnamon rolls, pies, soups and sauces.
Opening hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Another long-standing burger joint in town is Bun’s Restaurant, located at 14 W. Winter St. The restaurant is hard to miss, with its neon sign hanging above the street.
According to a 2014 Dispatch article, Bun’s has its roots in a bakery that Bavarian immigrant George F. Frederick Hoffman opened nearby on Winter Street in 1864. The locals’ nickname for the place, derived from a of its core products, eventually became its official. Last name. A succession of relatives joined the business over the years, and in 1927 the bakery moved to a dining hall next to the current main building.
Although the bakery no longer exists, the Bun’s name still lives on in the Bun Burger, which contains bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and a pickle. Other items on the menu include ham bread and liver and onions.
Opening hours: 11am-8pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11am-9pm Friday and Saturday, 11am-7pm Sunday. Closed on Mondays.
Typhoon Asian Fusion Bistro
“A bit of east in the west”, Typhoon has a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisine. Located at 10 N. Sandusky St., the menu includes an extensive sushi bar. Specialty rolls include the “Delaware” – made with salmon, kani and cream cheese – and the “OWU (Ohio Wesleyan University) Crunch”, a fried roll containing white fish, avocado, tamago and cream cheese.
Hot dishes include pad thai, Thai red curry and Hong Kong chicken, served with fresh papaya and red peppers cooked in a sweet and tangy sauce. Don’t forget to have a Japanese dessert, mochi ice cream, after dinner!
You can also enjoy an alcoholic drink with your meal. Typhoon offers a variety of cocktails, beers, wines and the Japanese rice drink, sake.
Opening hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Dishes include street tacos, a variety of burritos and enchiladas. There is also the Yucatan special, which consists of grilled chicken or shrimp and grilled vegetables on a bed of rice with cheese on top.

Mohio Pizza Co.
Located at 23 N. Sandusky St., Mohio Pizza Co. is known for its wood-fired pizzas and bar stocked with beer, wine and cocktails.
It’s owned by Monroe “Moe” Nelson, who developed a special brand of crust for the restaurant made with organic unbleached flour, artisan bread flour, water, salt and an entrée (a natural leavening agent) . The crust then sits for two days, according to a 2018 Dispatch article.
Dishes on the menu include pizza margherita with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, salt, pepper and grated garlic. Among the dishes other than the pizza, the meatballs are handmade, with a mixture of ground beef and pork, two types of ricotta, parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic and the restaurant’s own bread as binder. They are finished in a thick and rich rustic homemade sauce.
Opening hours: 4-8:30 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 4-10 p.m. Friday and 4-10 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.
