At the end of September, Hurricane Ian hit Florida, leaving thousands of people displaced and without power. Plum Southern owner Kristin Sullivan was among those affected.
After the hurricane passed, Sullivan, a native of Fort Myers, Florida, returned to find most of her home submerged in six feet of water. Although she recovered a few items, almost all of her belongings were lost, including her house, which was declared a total loss.
“I lost my Air BnB units downstairs, all my garages, my RV – unfortunately everything I had packed to move here was lost,” Sullivan said.
“It’s just a lot of loss, but that part is just material. You can replace things,” Sullivan said. things you can’t replace, so that’s the hardest part.”
Sullivan said it was very difficult to see the devastation of friends and neighbors who were like family.
“It was awful,” Sullivan said. “It was like a war zone.”
When she returned, what she found was unrecognizable.
“I went back the day after the hurricane to assess the loss and meet with adjusters, and it was just awful to see everything that had happened,” she said. “I left here driving with a generator, water, food, clothes and things to help them – there is nothing left in our street. Everything disappeared, and there were parts of the area that I didn’t see as it was still closed, with no electricity or access.
Sullivan said those who want to donate should send money to nonprofit organizations such as the American Red Cross in the Fort Myers area.
“I was lucky to have a place to get away from it all. While appreciated, I encourage people to donate to animal shelters or the Fort Myers Red Cross,” Sullivan said. “There are so many losses – people have lost so much. I’m lucky not to be in a position where I had nothing and nowhere to go.
Everyone has been so kind and LaGrange is an amazing place, she said.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Sullivan said. “I think I was meant to be here, despite the circumstances.”
