The Hurricanes scored 30 straight points to earn a 30-17 win over the Queensland Reds at AAMI Park.
The visitors got off to a good start as Hamish Stewart and Fraser McReight found the line.
However, they never seemed to recover from Connor Vest’s yellow card, which prompted the Hurricanes to return to the competition.
Doubles from Tyrel Lomax and Bailyn Sullivan proved crucial as Jason Holland’s men stayed calm and took the comeback victory.
Looking to avenge last year’s horrific start to the Trans-Tasman, the Reds decided to match the Hurricanes’ line speed as they controlled the first half.
The hosts struggled with discipline to start the game as they saw two players sent off for ten with Bailyn Sullivan and Pouri Rakete-Stonesyellow carded for dangerous tackles.
With Hunter Paisami proving he was a nightmare to stop, the center opened the game with a brutal run as Hamish Stewart finished off a deft offload from Taniela Tupou.
The dominating start was capped off by a great effort from the forwards to convert the close-rolling maul, Fraser McReight the do-gooder as they took a 17-0 lead.
It took a fortuitous broken play for the Hurricanes to return to the competition as Sullivan ran 60 yards without touching.
Connor Vest’s yellow card before the break provided the perfect opportunity to close the three-point margin for Jason Holland’s men as Tyrel Lomax crashed down the line.
With Vest still on the sidelines, Lomax dives for his second as the Reds looked in shock.
As Fraser McReight and Harry Wilson tried to inspire them into the game, the Hurricanes continued to build pressure and points as Barrett’s boot extended the lead.
Sullivan continues his redemption for his dangerous tackle as he clung to a Garden-Bachop grubber to seal the win.
