NEW DELHI: To strengthen India’s tsunami early warning system, India’s National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has set up a real-time network of 36 tide gauges (a device to measure the sea ​​level and tsunami detection) at various locations along the Indian coast to monitor tsunamis and provide timely warnings.
Of the 36 tide gauges, INCOIS, an autonomous institute of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), established four in Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Machilipatnam and Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh – which had suffered the shock of the 2004 tsunami which killed thousands of people. The information was given by young Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh in a written response to Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
A network of tide gauges is the only way to detect a tsunami in cases where seismic data is not available or when the tsunami is triggered by events other than an earthquake.
INCOIS also acquired basic airborne lidar terrain mapping elevation data from the National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) at Isro for tsunami flood modeling and vulnerability mapping. The data is available for mainland India up to two kilometers from the coast and would be used to predict sea level rise. Lidar (light detection and ranging) is a method of remote sensing that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure distances (variable distances).
The minister also informed LS that the department was also working on the Deep Ocean mission after receiving Cabinet approval last year. The National Institute of Ocean Technologies is developing a manned submersible capable of transporting three human beings to a depth of 6,000 m. Isro’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) is involved in the development of a 2.1m diameter titanium alloy human sphere for the manned submersible. The overall estimated cost of the mission is Rs 4,077 crore for a period of five years (2021 to 2026).
The project will allow the exploration of ocean resources for drinking water, clean energy and the blue economy. It will also make deep space mining and exploration a reality. Once the manned mission is launched, it will place India in the elite club of selected countries including the United States, Russia, Japan, France and China with the capability to launch manned missions at high Wed.
