Monkey bars and a tsunami wall could be coming to the Olympics.
Details of the new modern pentathlon obstacle discipline were announced on Tuesday.
The sport’s international governing body said last year that the equestrian discipline should be scrapped to boost the chances of retaining modern pentathlon’s place in the Olympics beyond 2024.
The obstacle discipline, chosen from 60 proposals, will replace equestrianism in the Olympic modern pentathlon program from the Los Angeles Games in 2028, pending approval at a congress in November. Star athletes have voiced their disapproval and modern pentathlon has yet to be added to the Los Angeles Olympic schedule.
The discipline which will make its debut with a test event on June 27 and 28 in Turkey features two to four athletes competing on a course up to 100 meters long with up to 10 obstacles. The list of obstacles in play:
1.5 meter wall
0.5 meter low crawl
Curved wall finish ‘Tsunami’
Modern pentathlon’s governing body called it “the biggest upheaval” since the sport made its Olympic debut in 1912.
Athletes will “run, walk, climb, crawl, slide, scramble, or otherwise propel themselves to the finish line on a bespoke course,” according to a press release.
Modern pentathlon will take place at the Paris 2024 Games with equestrianism, but it is not currently on the program for Los Angeles 2028. It could still be added for 2028.
“They must demonstrate a significant reduction in cost and complexity and improvements in the areas of safety, accessibility, universality, appeal to young people and the general public,” the president said. of the IOC. Thomas Bach said in December.
It was reported that riding was encouraged to be replaced after an incident of horse abuse at the Tokyo Olympics – a German trainer hit a horse that refused to jump – but Bach did not mention this in his public comments on the Olympic future of the event.
British Joe Choong and Kate Frenchwho won the gold medals in Tokyo, is among the modern pentathletes who have spoken out against the suppression of horse riding.
Other modern pentathlon events are fencing, swimming and a combined running and shooting event. Modern pentathlon was created by the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertinand has its roots in the duties required of a late 19th century soldier.
