BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – While hurricanes are defined by their wind, storm surges are the deadliest hazard associated with tropical systems.
Many factors go into the magnitude of the storm surge, including a storm’s strength, speed, size, and the shape of the coastline.
The National Weather Service reports all storm surge information in “Flood,” or how high the water will be above the ground.
Remember that even if you don’t live directly on the coast, rivers, creeks, and other features can allow the surge to travel further inland.
