Oklahoma sets new tornado record. Now what?

What does this mean for spring?

Well, certainly coming out of the big story October, the severe weather that we saw in the new tornado record that we set here in Oklahoma, 31 tornadoes, making it the most October. active never registered. And you know, it wasn’t even that close. I mean, we broke the previous record of 27 in 1998. Pretty much after that, the third event, the third severe weather event. And then we added two more after that. So certainly a very active month and it doesn’t look like we have finished totaling the number of tornadoes yet. I doubt we’re going to remove the tornadoes from this list, but it’s always possible that one or two people will arrive here much later as they continue to assess some of the storm reports, but at least we know that whatever. what was a record month of 31 tornadoes. And so what I’m going to show you here is a very loaded map and it comes straight from Weather dot gov. And so it’s the National and Norman Weather Service, which is also tabulating all the tornadoes in the state and how many we’ve had. So when you look at the preliminary numbers that we have so far for 2021, we’re here in January. We had four tornadoes in January nothing in February three in March five in April in May. So if you add up all the tornadoes we’ve had here, 16-19 we’ve had 23 tornadoes, until about June 1, we saw more tornadoes in October alone. Then during our severe weather season which is usually March to April May and a little bit of June June had a tornado July had a tornado then we hardly had one for August and September And here , we have highlighted 31 tornadoes for the month. of October. And that currently puts us as I drag it here, sitting at 56 tornadoes for the month of October. So definitely a very active month. Now I’m going to say this and I know some of you might be asking, you know, what does an active October mean for the spring season? And I’m going to tell you right away that there is no correlation between what happens and Fall and then what happens in Spring. But I know a lot of us are going to be a little curious because if you remember the previous tornado record that we had in October, went back to 1998. So a little box here and I’ll just show you what happened the following spring of 1998. And let me scroll here for a second here and so let me drag this here. So you can see all the dates. So just after the fall of 1998 of 1998, we had the spring of 1999. So January saw zero tornadoes February Salt tornado March saw six tornadoes April saw 19 tornadoes. And then in May 99, we had 90 tornadoes in June, 14 tornadoes. And that year alone, we ended up with a huge peek here, 145 tornadoes. So again, no correlation between what happens in October and then what happens the following spring. But I know some will certainly raise the question, you know, what does that mean? And so I just want to put it there. But always with every threat of severe weather, we’ll be watching it closely. But certainly October will be remembered as very memorable. 2021 for all the tornadoes we’ve had.
