Padang City Forms Tsunami Ready Community

This is a collective effort to make the people of Padang City smart to deal with disasters related to earthquakes and tsunamis. Residents are especially those domiciled in coastal areas such as Purus and Lolong Belanti.

Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA) – The Padang City Government, Padang Panjang Geophysical Station and relevant stakeholders have formed a Tsunami Ready Community as part of efforts to support public disaster preparedness.

Padang City Government Secretary Andree Algamar said on Saturday that he warmly welcomed the establishment of the tsunami-ready community.

“This is a collective effort to make the people of Padang City smarter to deal with disasters related to earthquakes and tsunamis. The people are especially those who are domiciled in coastal areas such than Purus and Lolong Belanti,” he added.

The Padang city government and relevant stakeholders have so far made earthquake and tsunami hazard mitigation efforts in the city, he noted.

“Efforts include creating evacuation routes, designating tsunami safety zones, providing shelter, etc.,” he said.

In addition, the city government has also launched Padang as a disaster smart city through information dissemination and simulation, aiming to make sub-districts, urban villages, schools, disaster-resistant families and public places.

“It aligns with the tsunami-ready community, which was formed and inaugurated during the commemoration of the September 30 earthquake,” he said.

Meanwhile, Padang Panjang Geophysical Station Chief Suaidi Ahad said the Tsunami Ready Community is a public capacity building program to deal with tsunami threats based on 12 indicators defined by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. (IOC) of UNESCO.

The 12 indicators were mapped and designed, such as tsunami danger zones, an estimate of people at risk in tsunami danger zones, economic sources, infrastructure and politics, and an easy-to-understand evacuation map.

Other indicators are the availability of sufficient and reliable facilities to receive tsunami early warning from the authorized agency for 24 hours, and the availability of sufficient and reliable facilities to broadcast tsunami early warning for 24 hours to the audience on time.
