Could the Red Wings land Shane Wright in the 2022 NHL Draft?
Detroit red wings
The Detroit Red Wings weathered a hurricane of Category 5 shooting to shut out the Carolina Hurricanes on the road to a well-deserved win.
After a disappointing loss to the Senators on Tuesday, the Red Wings badly needed a win in carolina to gain some momentum as they head into a tough series of matches. Even if they’re out of the playoffs, finishing the season on a high is important so the team has something to build on for next season. Luckily for the Red Wings, goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic played hard to get his former team the shutout and lead them to victory.
The Hurricanes played hard in the first and had the Red Wings on their heels early in the game. They found themselves on the power play and the special teams were huge for the Wings with a solid penalty kill and Tyler Bertuzi nearly scored a shorthanded goal! Unfortunately, they couldn’t build much momentum from the big kill.
With a lot of time in the Red Wings zone, Alex Nedeljkovic really needed to be on his game and he always was. Ned made some huge saves under the intense pressure of the Carolina offense. He even lost his stick for a short time and managed to keep every shot out of the net to keep Detroit in the game.
The Wings got off to a better start in the second and were definitely playing better hockey. There were times when the Canes were able to get extended zone time with multiple scoring chances and Nedeljkovic was amazing with insane saves! His game really kept his team in the game.
In the final five minutes of the period, the Wings began to gain control of the puck and generate solid scoring opportunities, which allowed them to build momentum. Carolina got a penalty and put the Wings on the power play late in the period in which they didn’t score. Immediately afterwards, Larkin got an excellent entry into the area and, with a sweet pass, set up Moritz Seider for a superb shot to score the game’s first goal with 13 seconds left in the period.
The momentum that built at the end of the second definitely carried over into the third as the boys got off to a good start. Early in the period, Mitchell Stephens put a shot on the goal side of the net and Adam Erne was there to catch it and round Antti Raanta for a nice goal to double the lead and keep the momentum going.
PK was huge again in the third killing two penalties in a row to prevent Carolina from cutting the 2-goal lead. Shortly after killing the second penalty, Filip Hronek fended off a Carolina pass on the ice and Filip Zadina picked it up and fired a shot just wide of Raanta to make it a 3-goal lead putting the Canes in Czechmate. Nedeljkovic continued to be incredible stopping the next 46 shots, earning his third shutout of the year against the team that traded him!
