Tornado almost forms on EPCOT

Something nasty is coming as something very unusual and very scary showed up at EPCOT last weekend. It’s not the Wicked Witch of the West from the old Great Movie Ride, but a funnel cloud forming in the sky.

For those who don’t know, a funnel cloud is a rotating cloud that is shaped like a funnel and is usually the precursor to a tornado. With the amount of bad publicity surrounding the parks, such as the poor condition of rides and skyrocketing prices, the last thing Disney needs is a tornado loose in their parks.

Several guests were able to spot the whirlwind-like phenomenon and took photos and videos and posted them to their social media accounts:

News 6 meteorologist Jonathan Kegges described the event:

Initially, it was difficult to determine if the cloud was spinning from video and photos taken at EPCOT. Rotation is the factor that differentiates a funnel cloud from a scud. Often, scud clouds look like funnel clouds or tornadoes. Scud clouds are a type of fractus cloud, which is a jagged cloud that forms in the warm, humid area below a thunderstorm updraft.

Fortunately, the cloud did not hit the ground and no immediate damage was caused. It is, however, quite scary to think that such a crowded place could be affected by such dangerous weather conditions. Orlando is best known for its rains and thunderstorms, but tornadoes are usually farther north in the Tampa area.

The Disney Parks are no strangers to bad weather or natural events. Disneyland is hit by California earthquakes, Tokyo Disneyland was hit by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and Disneyland Paris is experiencing snow.

Hopefully Walt Disney World never has to bear the wrath of a full tornado, because the damage from one would cost a fortune; Not to mention the possible injuries and/or deaths caused by such a thing.
