It was a winning quinella for Aston stallion Dee Bee in the Group 2 Traralgon Cup final last night after Typhoon Sammy won the race on the newly opened J-Curve circuit over the 395m .
Coming out of box seven, the Jason Thompson-trained fighter jumped smart and managed to stay with his inside rivals on the turn, before taking the lead and fending off a late challenge from Paua Of Janie and Hill Top Jonah in third in a time of 21.66. .
After a frantic morning that involved a system error in scraping Typhoon Sammy, the handler – Thompson’s son – was clearly thrilled with the performance, saying on social media that it’s a day he won’t forget.
It was fitting that Sammy would finally taste some well-deserved success after missing out on a place in the Melbourne Cup Group 1 Final last year due to a first-leg tie and rule enforcement of the winner of the slowest run.
The 34kg star is building a practical career record with last night’s win being the 22nd of his career since the 33rd start and his prize money total now at $75,435.
