WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (KAIT) – The town of Walnut Ridge could upgrade to keep its citizens safe from the elements.
If approved at Monday night’s city council meeting, there will soon be another tornado siren in town.
The siren would be installed just south of College City to fill a gap that currently lacks adequate coverage.
Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp said it was a much-needed upgrade and he expects it to pass.
“Now we recently dismantled two old sirens and sold them. One was a World War II air raid siren. It was so old. And they weren’t in good working order,” Snapp said. “This will take us down to five mermaids and cover the entire Walnut Ridge Bulk Residence area.”
The siren would have a radius of 5,000 feet and, if installed, would allow the city to begin regular siren testing again.
If the resolution passes, the installation could begin in the next few months, although no timetable has been set.
It’s important to remember that tornado sirens are primarily for those who are outside during a storm, so it’s always a good idea to have other means of receiving weather information if you’re in town. inside your home. If you rely solely on tornado sirens, you may miss crucial weather information.
